Entrepreneurship
What is entrepreneurship? The standard definition in economics is that enterprise is the ability to combine land, labour and capital in order to produce goods and services. An entrepreneur is a between taker who is rewarded by combining resources and taking business risks in the marketplace.
However, the skills of entrepreneurs apply to beyond this definition. Knowing about enterprise is essential as is understanding yet developing skills and behaviours for entrepreneurship allows thoughts to move forward into actions. Another way of looking at this is to see how independence of thought can be developed and used. “Thinking beyond the box”, “More than conventional wisdom” are phrases of how we can develop and use other ideas to address problems and developments.
At the heart of entrepreneurship is the ability to think and act with confidence and resolve. Using our minds to acquire continuously knowledge is the bedrock of personal and professional development. Extending that knowledge by practice and experimentation allows us to learn what works and does not work. Reflecting on our actions and results enables us to acquire insights that influence our sense of self-worth.
Entrepreneurship can be seen as a stock of knowledge to be used for decision making. It can also be seen as a process of development that takes forward this knowledge through practice into performance. At the end of the day results matter yet we must be able to reflect, amend, redirect and improve these results by our thoughts and subsequent actions.
Why study entrepreneurship? We face uncertain times. Employment patterns are changing. The desire for self-direction and control of our lives is becoming stronger. The idea of one lifelong employer may be replaced by several portfolio jobs over our working lives. No longer is there the certainty that faced earlier generations. In order to prepare for the future, we need to be flexible, thoughtful, positive and confident that we can take decisions to influence our direction of travel.
Entrepreneurship gives us the opportunity to approach uncertainty. It enables us to be flexible and nimble in our actions.
Entrepreneurship pervades much of what we do in life. It allows us to develop and grow. It creates opportunities for adding value to others either our employers or by self-employment.
Entrepreneurship is within the curriculum as it is not bound and limited to economics and business studies. The qualifications from this college offer a special opportunity to grow and move forward.
Do study the content of entrepreneurship in your chosen qualification. It is a wise investment. With application and persistence, you will be able to add value and serve others. Over to you!
